Wiring

Mine is a very simple installation, with just a couple of MGL Stratomaster instruments, a radio, transponder and GPS. So, the wiring isn't that much of a challenge - so I thought. I started off by buying the Aircraft Electrics 101 DVD, which more than paid for itself as I learned heaps. I continued the adventure by drawing a basic wiring diagram in PowerPoint to get myself organised and make sure all would work properly. (The schematic does not include the ignition circuits, which are explained very clearly on the plans.) I then ran this past a couple of avionics gurus in the Air Force - some good feedback ensured I was well on the right track. So after that, I ordered my electrics stuff from Aircraft Spruce.

The Stratomaster maxi singles (FLT-II and E-I) have quite a few sensor wires, so I decided to install a terminal strip to keep everything organised. I also bought a good pair of ratchet crimpers and a good wire stripper - well worth it. Then, it was into the wiring. As I write this, I have yet to finish, but am well on the way to getting there. I decided earlier on to do the electrics before installing the tank and glare shield, to make it easier to get to the wiring runs and have good access behind the panel. I also took the engine off to gain good access to the firewall.

The schematics call for a master solenoid that can be isolated should you have a run away starter. I bought a really good continuous duty one from a local dealer in Canberra. I also went one gauge thicker on all the wires - probably not necessary, but it gives me a warm and fuzzy. I also bought a 100V 10000uf capacitor to take out electrical noise between the battery and regulator. Adrian Clout recommended this one, he has the same in his Sonex. Just for grins, I've also included a photo of my knee pad. My good buddy in Colorado Springs had this made for me in Korea, with my rego, name and a picture of the Sonex - pretty neat huh?
