I decided to polish the aeroplane quite early on in the piece. My decision was based on two very important criteria and one of lesser importance. The cost of painting would have to be the main reason, followed by the added weight that painting brings. Finally, I think the plane looks rather lovely all shined up. Having said all that, I must admit that if I had a spare $5000 burning a hole in my pocket, I would most likely have had the thing painted.

Polishing aluminium to a mirror finish is something that one really needs to experience before one can appreciate what a freaking mongrel job it is. I asked heaps of people who had achieved outstanding results about how they did it – each had a slightly different approach that worked for them. One thing I did learn was that there are many ways to go about it.

I ended up combining a couple of very good ideas into a system that worked for me. This took quite a while and many man hours of work to settle upon, but I have been pretty happy with the results.
