Main Spar

Work on the main spar commenced on Friday 19 January 2007.  There is a lot of fabrication to do, fashioning parts out of aluminium angle extrusion.  It took me a good week to fashion all the parts shown in the picture.  I have now discovered the worth of the vixen file – what an amazing tool it is.  I use the band saw to cut within a couple of millimetres of the cut line, then the vixen file to smooth out the cut marks and get a lovely mirror finish.

I unpacked the main spar caps and spar webs in preparation.  The spar caps no longer come anodised, due to a new contractor Sonex is using.  So there is a little preparation required in smoothing out the machining marks along the length of each cap and eliminating all stress risers.
