Instrument Panel

My instruments arrived in May 08, so I began to work out how they will be sited. I have decided on a steam driven ASI on the left, then a couple of MGL Avionics Maxi Singles - the FLT-II and E-I. Then I will install the Microair M760 VHF radio. I have a Narco AT-150 on order, which will be situated under the radio and E-I. There will be a couple of Van eyeball vents in each side of the panel, plus the switches and circuit breakers at the bottom.

The Instrument Panel was completed on 25 Oct 08, my son's 24th birthday!  I had to complete all the wiring and install the glare shield and fuel tank before being able to finish the panel, and for this reason it didn't look like much progress was being made for many weeks.  However, now that  it's done, the plane suddenly looks serious.  There isn't much room behind there and my simple installation pretty much took up most of the availabe space.  However, I'm happy that I had enough room for both eyeball vents and didn't have to situate them under the panel.

The transponder has about 1/8" clearance at the back from the fuel tank - again, not much room.  Installing a Microair, Becker or similar transponder would be a better solution if you can afford it, but I'm building on a budget.  I used aluminium rivets to attach the panel, in case I want to replace it down the track.

The glare shield cover is from the Sonex Cordura upholstery package.  It has one edge hemmed (the one nearest the panel) and the builder has to measure the other three sides and put a hem in them.  Pretty straight forward and easy - my lovely wife had it sewn up in less than half an hour using her sewing machine.  I attached it to the glare shield using contact cement - no dramas.
