Fitting The Tail

The horizontal stab required some minor trimming where the lower parts met the fuselage sides. I also needed to file some material from the elevator control horn, as it interfered with the vertical tail in the upward deflection. I needed to file back into the weld at one part, but only a small section. Once that was done and the stab was trial fitted, I went ahead and drilled the four holes into the longerons. Lesson here - make sure the stab is as precise as you can get it, because there is very little room for error where the fore and aft holes drill through to the longerons. Under the longerons are aluminium cross angles that are drilled through. If you don't get it right, these angles will interfere with the 1/4" bolts that hold the stab in place. Mine were pretty close to the angles, but OK. Had my stab been situated 1/16" further aft, I would have had significant problems with the bolts. The photos show what I mean - taken from under the fuselage looking up at the holes.
