Final Rigging and
First Flight

After relocating the plane from my garage to Goulburn Airport (90km away), I got stuck into the final stages of the build. Doug McLean helped me attach the wings, which took us a couple of hours after installing all the safety pins. Then I trimmed and attached the wing root doublers, including applying some non-skid material that I bought from Vans. I also bought some wing root seal from Vans, which is an 'H' mould rubber channel. I worked out that the best gap between the wing root doubler and the fuselage side was 3/16", which allowed enough of a gap for the rubber seal to seat nicely and still provide a tight seal against the fuse. I firstly attached the rubber seal to the doublers, then riveted the doublers to the wings. I didn't have to apply any adhesive as the seals are kept tightly in place as they are.

The left side doubler went on fine, but I ran out of rivets with the right side doubler. Fortunately, an Adelaide scratch builder (Greg Jones ) has hundreds of CCP-42 rivets spare and he posted me a couple of hundred - thanks Greg!

With the wing root doublers in place, there was nothing left to do but attach the aft fuselage floor and get the ailerons and flaps set up according to the plans. I will be doing this on Saturday 25th July, followed by the weight and balance process. The Sports Aircraft Association of Australia (our equivalent to the EAA) owns a set of aircraft scales that they loan out to members free of charge. I picked these scales up from Sydney and plan to weigh the plane either on Saturday 25th or the following Saturday. Once that is done, I'll be fuelling up and starting the Aerovee for the first time.
