Elevators

 


The elevator skins were cut using the metal shears and snips – no dramas here, just make sure you double check the cut line measurements.  I temporarily installed the centre and end ribs prior to drilling the piano hinge to ensure the inner elevator wall was drilled correctly.  I don’t know what it is about the hinges, but I managed to get the LH hinge slightly out of alignment, just like the rudder.  There’s about 1/32” difference from one end to the other, despite using the depth gauge as recommended by Jeff Schultz.  I may have to clamp it tighter, as the thing was spot on prior to drilling.  Again, there is no issue in the scheme of things, but I was annoyed that after spending ages getting the line just right, the end result was less than perfect.  At least the hinge line is straight as a die.

The RH hinge was done slightly differently.  I fashioned five jigs and taped them across the top skin of the elevator.  This way, I could guarantee an even depth for the entire length.  It worked out really well – at last I have the hinge issue sorted!!
